FAQs
Questions patients often ask
If yours isn't here, Chris's secretaries will know the answer or find it out.
Do I need a referral?
Not to see Chris privately as a self‑funding patient. If you are using private medical insurance, your insurer will usually require a referral from your GP or dentist before they authorise the consultation, so check with them first.
What is the difference between an oral surgeon and a maxillofacial surgeon?
An oral surgeon is a dentist who has specialised in surgery of the mouth. An Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon is qualified in both dentistry and medicine and has completed a full surgical training, so the specialty covers the whole of the mouth, jaws, face and neck. Chris is an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon, which means he can treat the dental problems an oral surgeon would and the broader facial and jaw conditions that need a medical and surgical background.
How soon can I be seen?
Normally within a week. Tell the secretary when you call if you are worried about a lesion or in significant pain.
Will I be asleep for my treatment?
It depends on the procedure and on you. Many procedures are done under local anaesthetic, sometimes with sedation to help you relax. General anaesthetic is available for more complex surgery or if you would strongly prefer it. Chris will discuss the options and recommend what he thinks is safest and most comfortable for you.
Can I have a procedure on the same day as my consultation?
No. The first appointment is for assessment and discussion. Procedures, including biopsies, are carried out in theatre or in a dedicated treatment clinic at a separate appointment, usually within a week or two.
How much will treatment cost?
A first consultation is £275 and a follow‑up £175. Treatment costs depend on what is needed and are quoted in writing before anything is booked. See Fees & insurance.
Is Chris covered by my insurer?
Chris is recognised by Bupa, Aviva, Vitality, Aetna and Healix. If your insurer isn't listed, ask the secretary; it is often possible to be seen as a self‑funding patient. Cover for oral surgery varies by policy, so ask your insurer whether the specific procedure is covered and whether there is an excess. The secretaries can help with pre‑authorisation.
Can I see Chris on the NHS instead?
Yes, through a referral from your GP or dentist to University Hospitals of Leicester. NHS appointments can't be arranged through this website. If you have started privately and would prefer to continue on the NHS, Chris will tell you honestly whether that is possible and how to go about it.
Do you treat children or teenagers?
Chris's private practice is currently for adults. Children and teenagers are seen through his NHS practice at University Hospitals of Leicester, by referral from a dentist or GP. If you are enquiring about a 16 or 17 year old who needs a minor procedure as part of orthodontic treatment, contact the practice, as arrangements for treating older teenagers privately are under review.
Who do I contact if I'm worried after surgery?
Chris. He gives every patient his own mobile number before they leave hospital and would rather hear from you than have you sit at home worrying. Text or call at any time. The hospital will also give you the ward's number.
Where can I park?
Both Spire Leicester and Nuffield Health Leicester have free on‑site parking. See Locations.
Will my dentist and GP be kept informed?
With your permission, yes. Chris writes to your referring dentist or GP after each consultation and after any treatment, so that your records are complete.
